Food Relief 2025: Fighting Hunger One Community at a Time
The lean season in Northern Zambia typically runs from January to April — the months after the previous harvest has been eaten and before the new one is ready. For families who depend entirely on subsistence farming, it is the hardest stretch of the year. Children go to school hungry. Adults work on empty stomachs. The physically vulnerable — the elderly, the chronically ill, pregnant mothers — face the greatest risk.
In March 2025, Inside-Out Community Ventures launched a targeted food relief campaign to help communities in and around Munyama bridge that gap.
What We Distributed
Working with local community leaders to identify the most vulnerable households, our team distributed:
- 25 kg bags of mealie meal (the staple food across most of Zambia) to 142 households
- Cooking oil, salt, and dried beans as complementary nutrition
- Oral rehydration salts and basic vitamin supplements for young children and expectant mothers
In total, more than 700 individuals across six villages received direct food support — a number that represents roughly 40% of the immediate population we serve.
Community-Led Distribution
We deliberately did not run this as an external "drop-in" operation. Distribution was organised and managed by elected village welfare committees — local leaders who know their neighbours, understand the nuances of need within their community, and can ensure that support reaches those who genuinely require it most. Inside-Out provided the resources; the community provided the wisdom and the hands.
This approach takes more preparation than a simple hand-out, but it builds something more valuable: community ownership and trust.
Food Relief Is Not Enough
We are honest about the limitations of food relief. A bag of mealie meal addresses an immediate crisis but does nothing to prevent the next one. That is why our food relief programme exists alongside — not instead of — our longer-term food security work: the solar irrigation kits we provide to local farmers, the agricultural training we facilitate with district extension officers, and the advocacy we do to connect communities with government support programmes they are entitled to but often unaware of.
The goal is simple: to make food relief unnecessary within a generation, because communities are equipped to feed themselves regardless of rain, regardless of season, regardless of the fickleness of climate.
How You Can Help
The March 2025 campaign cost approximately $3,800 to run — roughly $5.40 per person reached.
