Bridging the generation Gap through sports - Introducing a new sport - Ntindili.

A soccer match in progress during the Munyama community tournament

Our September 2026 tournament brought together 11 soccer teams and five netball teams in a vibrant celebration of sportsmanship. What started as a friendly netball match between a visiting team of volunteers and local women has grown into an anticipated community tradition, drawing spectators from both the mainland and nearby islands.

This year, the older generation stole the spotlight. Eager to join the fun, they rekindled childhood memories by introducing a traditional sport from their youth. While only a few elders remembered the rules, it was an entirely new, thrilling spectacle for the younger generation.

About the Sport: Ntindili.

  • The Equipment: Fresh tree trunks (around 30cm in diameter) are cut into 10cm discs that roll smoothly along the ground. Straight branches are sharpened into wooden spears.
  • The Setup: The game is played with eight players, divided into two teams of four.
  • The Gameplay: One team rolls the disc across the open field. The opposing team stands in a line, attempting to spear the disc while it is in motion.
  • Scoring & Timing: If the disc passes safely to the other side untouched, the rolling team scores a point. If the defending team spears it, they score. Teams swap roles after 7 minutes.

Watching the matches was incredibly entertaining—resembling a spirited hunting club trying to catch a moving rabbit—and it brought an unforgettable burst of laughter and history to our tournament.
